Print Server Configuration

The Print Management console gives easy access to the overall view of a print server. Instead of having to manage elements that relate to each printer installed on a server, you can manage the entire print server's elements in terms of drivers, forms, ports, and printers.

Let's look at the three areas of the Print Management console: driver management, forms management, and ports.

Driver Management

The Drive tab of the Print Management console for a print server shows all the drivers that are loaded and being used on the print server. From this single area, it is possible to quickly add a new printer driver or remove printer drivers. This tab has the same content as that displayed in the Drivers tab of the print server properties.

Forms Management

The Forms tab shows all the forms that are print target sizes for both the built-in and loaded drivers. From this area, forms can be deleted or new forms added of any custom size. This tab has the same content as that displayed in the Forms tab of the print server properties.

Ports

The Ports tab gives access to creating new ports on the print server or modifying existing ports. This tab has the same content as that displayed in the Ports tab of the print server properties or the printer properties.

Advanced Features

One final area of customization is available by right-clicking on the print server and selecting Properties. The Advanced tab gives you access to some additional configuration.

The spooler folder is where the print jobs are spooled prior to printing, and it can be moved if you expect large amounts of spool information. You can also change what logging is performed for the print server in terms of errors, warnings, and information events. By default, only errors and warning events are written to the Application log and the source is SpoolerSpools.
