Building Formulas with Common Time Functions

  1. Open the Exercise8-4.xlsx file located in your Chap8 folder in the Excel 2007 Workbook folder on your hard disk.
The file contains a Time Formulas worksheet that you can use to practice using some of the Time functions.
  2. Display the current time in cell B1 using the NOW function format the result with the 1:30 PM Time format.
Next, you will use the TIME function to create various times using the hour, minutes, and seconds entered into the cell range A3:C8.
  3. Click cell D3 and then select the TIME function on the Date and Time button's dropdown menu. Then, click A3 to enter its address in the Hour text box; press Tab and click cell B3 to enter its address in the Minute text box; and press Tab and click C3 to enter its address in the Second text box. Finally, click OK to close the TIME Function Arguments dialog box.
Excel enters the time formatted as 1:10 AM in cell D3.
  4. Open the Format Cells dialog box (Ctrl+1) and then format this cell with the Time type 1:30:55 PM sample before you use the Fill handle to copy the formula down to the cell range D4:D7.
Excel displays the times with hours, minutes, and seconds displayed in this cell range.
  5. Widen column D to display all the times. Then, copy the times calculated in the cell range D3:D7 and then paste their fractional values in the range E3:E7.
To copy only the values from a cell range, paste them into place using the Paste Values option on the Paste button's drop-down menu on the Ribbon's Home tab (Alt+HVV).
  6. In cell B10, select the TIMEVALUE function on the Date and Time button's drop-down menu to convert the text entry in cell A10 to a bona fide time.
Excel returns the fractional time value 0.52083 to cell B10.
  7. Open the Format Cells dialog box (Ctrl+1) and format the result in this cell with the 13:30:55 type time format and then copy this formula down to the cell range B11:B14.
Now ready to check your time formulas and their answers before you save your work.
  8. Use the Side by Side feature to check your answers against those shown in the Time Formulas sheet in the Solved8-4.xlsx workbook file in your Chap8 folder inside your Excel 2007 Workbook folder. When everything checks out, click cell B1 in your Time Formulas worksheet and save it in a new workbook named Time Function Practice.xlsx inside your Excel 2007 Practice folder. Then exit Excel.
