Mailbox Services in Exchange Server
The primary function of the Mailbox role in Exchange Server 2010 is to serve and store mailbox data. In this version, advances have been made to the Mailbox role to increase the sophistication of high-availability options while reducing the non-core services by moving them to other Exchange roles. Without a solid core database, the other services are irrelevant. Although rumors have circulated since the debut of Exchange 2000 Server about replacing the Exchange ESE (JET Blue) database with a Microsoft SQL Server-based database, the ESE database is still in the product, performing better and providing unique high-availability solutions that other messaging and relational databases are not able to provide. This tutorial covers the basic Mailbox server architecture, and new features and functionality in the Mailbox server role, and then applies some real-world administrative guidelines for configuration and maintenance.
