Microsoft has published the minimum hardware requirements for retail editions of Windows 7 (Home Premium, Professional, and Ultimate). Please note that the RAM and disk space requirements for 64-bit versions are slightly higher than for 32-bit versions.

Minimum system requirements for Windows 7:

  • Processor (CPU): 1 GHz or faster, with 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) architecture.
  • RAM: at least 1 GB for a 32-bit system and 2 GB for a 64-bit system.
  • Graphics adapter: DirectX 9 support and WDDM driver version 1.0 or higher.
  • Hard disk: at least 16 GB of free space for the 32-bit version and 20 GB for the 64-bit version.

Additional:

  • A DVD drive or other optical disc device is not required, but is often useful.
  • A mouse or other pointing device, keyboard, sound system, and Internet access are also required for everyday use.
  • Some Windows 7 features require special hardware, such as a TV tuner for watching and recording TV shows in Media Center.
