Enlisting the Assistance of a Windows Troubleshooter

Windows has a collection of troubleshooters that can help you track down the cause of common issues and resolve them. To run a troubleshooter, click Start, Control Panel, and (below System and Security) click Find and fix problems. Click the link for the program or feature group that's giving you problems (for example, Programs, Network and Internet, or System and Security) and then click the specific item. This launches the troubleshooter for that item. Click Next and then follow the troubleshooter's lead.

Searching for Solutions Online

If you can connect to the Internet and access the web, you can often find solutions to common PC problems simply by using your favorite search engine, such as Google or Yahoo!. Run your web browser, access the search engine, type a description of the problem, and press Enter. The search likely returns a bunch of links to pages that may or may not contain the solution to the problem you're experiencing.

If Windows or one of your applications displays a specific error message, jot down the message and then enter it as your search phrase enclosed in quotes-for example, "Network Path Not Found".

Checking the Manufacturer's Website

Every PC hardware and software company has a website and almost always provides technical support, software or driver updates, and online forums where you can find help. If you have an inkling that a particular hardware device or program is causing problems, head directly to the manufacturer's website. Often the manufacturer's website will not appear near the top of the search results when you search for a specific problem, but it will pop up immediately when you search the manufacturer's website.

If you can't find the answer on the website, you can usually find contact information, a contact form, or a link to online technical support.

Getting Remote Assistance

Windows 7 Remote Assistance feature to obtain help from a friend or relative over the Internet. Many manufacturers also have their own remote assistance programs and technology that enable technicians to take control of your PC and help you resolve issues. Be sure to check the manufacturer's website for a link to live technical support.
