Creating a Homegroup

With all your home computers configured for homegroup networking, choose one of the Windows 7 computers to use to create the homegroup, and then follow these steps:

  1. In the Network and Sharing Center, locate the Homegroup setting and click the Ready to Create link. (Alternatively, click Start, type homegroup, and press Enter.) The Homegroup window appears.
  2. Click Create a Homegroup. The Create a Homegroup Wizard appears, and the first dialog box asks you to choose what you want to share.
  3. Activate the check box beside each type of file you want to share, and then click Next. The Create a Homegroup Wizard displays your homegroup password.
  4. Make a note of the password (or click the Print Password and Instructions link, and then click Print This Page).
  5. Click Finish. Windows 7 displays the Homegroup window, which I discuss a bit later (see "Changing Homegroup Settings").
